Low Income Energy Assistance (LIEAP)

LIEAP

The Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) is a federally-funded program that provides a one-time payment to help with heating bills. You do not have to be at risk of disconnection or delinquent to take advantage of this program. Residents will need to meet the income guidelines, be responsible for the bill, provide their account number and show proof of income. Payments are made directly to the heating vendor. The LIEAP program is administered December 1st through March 31st.

Only households containing an elderly person age 60 and above or a disabled persons receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) are eligible to potentially receive benefits from December 1st through December 30th or until funds are exhausted. Any households can potentially receive benefits from January through March 31 or until funds are exhausted.

LIEAP Qualifying Household Criteria

  • One U.S. citizen or legal resident
  • Meet an income test
  • Responsible for energy bills
  • You DO NOT have to be behind on your power or natural gas bill for assistance

Applicants can apply online at epass.nc.gov or can submit a paper application through the mail, fax or by dropping it off at the Social Services Department. Individuals who are homebound or unable to mail or drop off applications can contact DSS at 252-728-3181, option 5 to complete the application by phone.
