NC DHHS NOTICE: NC HEALTH CHOICE IS MOVING TO MEDICAID
On April 1, 2023, beneficiaries currently receiving NC Health Choice coverage will move to NC Medicaid.
Currently, North Carolina has two similar, but different, programs that offer medical coverage for eligible children age 6 to 18 - NC Medicaid and NC Health Choice.
A provision in the North Carolina senate budget, approved in July 2022, directed the Department of Health and Human Services to move NC Health Choice beneficiaries from the NC Health Choice program to the Medicaid program.
NC Health Choice
North Carolina Health Choice (NCHC) is North Carolina's health insurance program for children under age 19 who have no health insurance and whose family's income prevents them from affording health care, but who are ineligible for Medicaid. NCHC is coverage through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, but is administered through social services because it is publically funded program governed by federal and state laws. The program is based on 200% of the poverty level income. The program can end or be frozen when funds are depleted.
