Carteret County Board of Commissioners appoint Interim County Attorney

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (March 19, 2024) – The Carteret County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to appoint Sharon Griffin as Interim County Attorney during their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, March 18, 2024. Griffin will fulfill the duties previously held by outgoing County Attorney Claud “Rob” Wheatly.

Griffin has a distinguished legal career, currently serving as an attorney at law and partner with Mewborn & DeSelms in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Previously, she served as Onslow County Manager, overseeing a complex organization of over 1,300 employees and 26 departments dedicated to serving over 200,000 residents. Griffin also held leadership roles with national, state and county organizations, serving as senior national program director for the National Association of Counties and executive general counsel for the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC). As executive general counsel for the NCACC, Griffin provided legal expertise to county commissioners, county attorneys, and county managers on a wide range of issues, including public records laws, health and human services, land use, and employment law.

As the top legal advisor for Carteret County Government, the County Attorney provides legal counsel and representation to all county departments and agencies. The attorney also anticipates potential legal issues and recommends policies, procedures, and actions to the County Manager and Board of Commissioners.

Griffin earned her Juris Doctorate from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University, a Master of Arts in Communication from Radford University, and bachelor’s degrees in arts and science from North Carolina State University. She is also a graduate of the UNC School of Government’s program in Municipal & County Administration. She is licensed to practice law in North Carolina and is a certified North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission (NCDRC) Superior Court Mediator.
