CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (Sept. 25, 2025) – Carteret County Emergency Management is closely monitoring two tropical systems in the Atlantic this week. There is higher than usual uncertainty regarding the timing, track, and intensity of each system, and forecasters continue to update their predictions. Residents are encouraged to check their hurricane and emergency plans as the weekend approaches, while keeping in mind that conditions could evolve into next week.
“Our focus is on readiness, not alarm,” said Interim Emergency Services Director Eddie Lewis. “Our team has extensive experience managing storms and emergencies. We have well-established procedures and partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies, so residents can be confident that we are prepared to respond quickly and effectively if needed.”
The County continuously monitors forecasts from the National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service and provides updates through local media, social media channels, and the County website. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through multiple sources, including NOAA weather radios, local news stations, and official websites such as www.ReadyNC.gov. Emergency operations and communication plans are in place and ready to be activated if needed.
Residents should ensure their emergency plans are current and that their homes and families are prepared. Essential steps include gathering supplies such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, and a first-aid kit. Families should establish a communication plan and designate a safe meeting place. Residents should know whether they live in a hurricane evacuation zone and familiarize themselves with evacuation routes. Securing the home, including trimming trees and using shutters or plywood on windows, can help reduce potential damage.
In addition to home and family preparedness, residents should be aware of potential marine hazards along the coast. Marine conditions are expected to be affected in the coming days, with swells from these systems likely increasing the risk of dangerous rip currents along the North Carolina shoreline. Because slight changes in storm direction or intensity can significantly affect conditions, residents are encouraged to monitor official sources regularly.
Carteret County Emergency Management will continue to provide updates as the situation develops. For official storm information, visit www.hurricanes.gov and www.weather.gov/mhx.
