CARTERET COUNTY, NC (August 29, 2023) – As the Labor Day weekend approaches, Sheriff Asa Buck of Carteret County urges all residents to come together and ensure a joyful and safe holiday for everyone.

During the Labor Day holiday period, our roads see some of the heaviest traffic flows of the year. In light of this, Sheriff Buck is offering these essential safety tips to all Carteret County citizens and visitors:

  • Keep your focus active on the road, shifting your attention every few seconds to scan both ahead and behind you. Avoid fixating on a single point on the road or staring blankly ahead.
  • When overtaking a vehicle, glance at the ground beside its front wheel. This quick check can instantly alert you if the car is about to change course, giving you crucial seconds to react.
  • When passing, start moving into the opposite lane of traffic while still at a considerable distance behind the leading car. This provides space to build up speed and allows you to return to your lane if necessary. Avoid abrupt lane changes when passing.
  • Use proper signals like brake lights, turn signals, horn, and headlights to communicate your intentions well in advance, ensuring other drivers are aware of your actions.
  • Practice "aim high" steering by frequently looking ahead at distant points. This aids your steering and helps you monitor vehicles in front and oncoming traffic.
  • Maintain a safe following distance. Remember that higher speeds require more time to stop, and extra space in front of your vehicle is important, especially in conditions like tailgating, slippery roads, or low visibility.

In closing, Sheriff Buck emphasizes the importance of practicing the Golden Rule while driving – being courteous and patient with other motorists. "Let's make this Labor Day weekend a safe one on the roads in Carteret County," Sheriff Buck concludes.
