Carteret County encourages preparedness ahead of hurricane season

News Releases Posted on May 06, 2024

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (May 6, 2024) – With National Hurricane Preparedness Week underway (May 5-11), Carteret County Emergency Services is urging residents to participate by updating their emergency plans and supplies kit.

June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season, and emergency services officials want residents to prepare to protect themselves and their loved ones from the impacts of severe weather, such as hurricanes.

“We want to encourage all Carteret County residents to join us in taking action now to ensure the safety of their families, homes, and businesses,” said Carteret County Emergency Services Director Stephen Rea. “Preparation is key, and there’s no better time now to get ready for the upcoming hurricane season.”

Carteret County Emergency Services urges residents to take the time to write down your hurricane plan and update your emergency supplies kit with enough nonperishable food and water to last each person in your family a minimum of one week. Kits should also include:

  • First-aid kit
  • Weather radio and batteries
  • Prescription medicines
  • Sleeping bag or blankets
  • Changes of clothes
  • Hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and deodorant
  • Cash
  • Pet supplies including food, water, bedding, leashes, muzzles, and vaccination records

Residents who live independently and are on oxygen, have a physical disability that would make it difficult to evacuate, or have other medical needs are strongly encouraged to sign up for the Medically Fragile Registry. Learn more about this resource and how to enroll here.

Residents should monitor local news outlets and NOAA Weather Radios for the latest weather updates and potential evacuation orders. Familiarize yourself with your community’s evacuation routes and heed all warnings from state and local officials.
