CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (September 5, 2024) – Carteret County officials are encouraging residents to take proactive steps to prepare for emergencies as the county observes National Preparedness Month in September.

The annual Federal Emergency Management Agency campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. 

"National Preparedness Month offers an important opportunity for individuals and communities to evaluate their resilience in the face of unexpected challenges," said Carteret County Emergency Services Director Stephen Rea. "Building a strong, prepared community requires the collective efforts of government, businesses, and residents. By taking proactive measures, we can significantly improve our ability to respond efficiently and recover rapidly from disasters."

Carteret County is susceptible to hurricanes, flooding, and severe weather. To strengthen community resilience, officials are promoting six pillars of preparedness:

• Build a Kit: Assemble essential supplies, equipment, and food for at least seven days for all family members. Keep kits at home, work, and in vehicles.
• Make a Plan: Develop a family emergency plan outlining communication strategies and meeting locations.
• Stay Informed: Ensure you receive timely emergency alerts by signing up for CodeRED and exploring other notification options. Stay updated on weather advisories and critical events affecting Carteret County through wireless emergency alerts, the Emergency Alert System, NOAA, and local media.
• Get Involved: Participate in local response and recovery efforts through organizations like the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
• Know Your Hazards: Identify potential threats and take steps to mitigate risks.
• Learn a Skill: Acquire essential skills like CPR, first aid, and fire extinguisher use.
