Tax Administration Accepting Appeals for 2025 Assessed Values

News Releases Posted on April 03, 2025

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (April 3, 2025) – Carteret County property owners who recently received updated property value notices following the 2025 countywide reappraisal have until 5 p.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025, to file an appeal. Appeals can be submitted electronically, in person, or by mail, postmarked by the deadline. In person appeals can be submitted at the Tax Administration Office in the County Administration Building, 302 Courthouse Square, Beaufort.

The reappraisal, mandated by the state, ensures fair and equitable property assessments. While notices indicate a 30-day window to file appeals with the Tax Administrator’s Office, the final deadline for all appeals is May 2.

Property owners are encouraged to work directly with Tax Office staff during the initial 30-day review period to address concerns and resolve discrepancies. This initial review is standard practice in North Carolina and offers an opportunity to resolve any discrepancies prior to scheduling the formal hearing with the Board of Equalization and Review.

To support an appeal, property owners must provide detailed supporting information, such as recent appraisals, sales records of comparable properties, repair cost estimates, photographs showing atypical conditions, or other factors affecting value. A county real property appraiser will review the property and any submitted documentation. After filing an appeal, the property owner will be contacted by an assigned appraiser.

The Board of Equalization and Review will convene on April 7, 2025, for an organizational meeting. During this session, board members will take their oath of office, undergo necessary training, and establish their schedule for hearing appeals related to the 2025 property reappraisals. Individual appeal cases will not be heard on this date.

It is important to note that appeals focus solely on assessed property values and cannot address tax rates.
