Senior Services Offers Free Fans to Seniors and At-Risk Residents through Operation Fan Heat Relief

News Releases Posted on June 25, 2025

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (June 25, 2025) – With summer temperatures rising, Carteret County Senior Services is helping residents stay cool this summer through Operation Fan Heat Relief. Funded by donations from the Duke Energy Foundation, the program offers free fans to Carteret County residents age 60 and older, as well as younger adults with qualifying disabilities; fans must be picked up by the eligible individual.

“Summer heat can be dangerous for seniors living without air conditioning,” said Shelly Ashley, Senior Services director. “When temperatures soar, opening windows and using a fan can significantly improve air circulation and help residents stay cool.”

To reduce the risk of heat-related illness, older adults are advised to take the following precautions during periods of extreme heat:

  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing
  • Avoid strenuous activity outdoors or in hot environments
  • Wear a hat and sunscreen when spending time in the sun
  • Stay hydrated with water, fruit or vegetable juices, or iced tea
  • Store medications in a cool, dry place
  • Check on friends or neighbors who live alone

“It’s important to be prepared for summer heat waves,” Ashley added. “Extreme temperatures and high humidity can lead to serious health risks, especially for vulnerable populations.”

Early signs of heat stress include fatigue, dizziness, nausea and loss of appetite. If symptoms occur, move to a cool place, drink fluids, remove excess clothing and rest.

Seek immediate medical help by calling 911 for more severe symptoms such as hot, dry skin; fainting; a rapid, weak pulse; shallow breathing; vomiting; or a body temperature over 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fans are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. For more information, contact Carteret County Senior Services at the Leon Mann Jr. Enrichment Center at 252-247-2626.
