Carteret County Rescinds Burn Ban Effective April 2, 2025

News Releases Posted on April 02, 2025

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (April 2, 2025) – Due to recent rainfall, improved vegetation conditions, and a reduced risk of fires, the Carteret County Fire Marshal’s Office is lifting a county-wide burn ban, effective 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

This decision follows updated guidance from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which announced the statewide lift on the open burning restriction. The ban, implemented on March 21, 2025, to mitigate wildfire risks during dry conditions, prohibited all open burning across Carteret County, including within 100 feet of a dwelling. Residents are now permitted to resume open burning activities in accordance with local ordinances and regulations.

However, the Carteret County Fire Marshal’s Office urges residents to use caution when engaging in any outdoor burning. While the immediate threat has subsided, dry conditions can return quickly, and fire safety remains paramount. Residents are reminded to follow these safety guidelines:

  • Always check local regulations and obtain any necessary permits before burning.
  • Clear a wide area around the burn site to prevent the spread of fire.
  • Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Have water or a fire extinguisher readily available.
  • Be aware of wind conditions and avoid burning on windy days.
  • Only burn vegetative debris; never burn trash, lumber, tires, plastics, or other non-vegetative materials.
  • When using grills, smokers, and outdoor cookers, make sure that they are used in a safe manner, and away from flammable materials.

Residents are reminded that even with the ban lifted, they are still responsible for any damage caused by fires they start.
