[ARCHIVED] Litter Free Land and Sea volunteers clean up 2,500 pounds of litter in Carteret County

2023 Down East Crew

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (April 24, 2023) – On Saturday, April 22, volunteers all across Carteret County helped clean up our community during the countywide litter cleanup event.

The event, hosted by Litter Free Land and Sea and Carteret-Craven Electric Co-op, was held in conjunction with the N.C. Department of Transportation’s biannual statewide litter sweep campaign. Participants cleaned more than eight locations around the county, including town parks, beaches, streets, and wooded areas. Armed with pick sticks and trash bags, volunteers collected over 200 bags worth of trash for a grand total of 2,500 pounds of litter throughout the county.

“I want to thank all of our site captains, community partners, and volunteers for taking the time out of their Saturday to help make Carteret County a cleaner and safer place to live,” said Lyndzie Osteen, litter campaign coordinator with Carteret County. “It is truly an awesome to see the community come together for a good cause.”

In addition, volunteers also collected litter from the public right-of-way along U.S. Highway 58 in Peletier, U.S. Highway 70 to U.S. Highway 101 in Beaufort, and Marshallberg Road in Down East Carteret County.

Participants received green “Litter Free Land and Sea” t-shirts for their volunteer efforts and were eligible for prizes that included gift certificates for restaurants, store merchandise, family-centered places, and more. Volunteers also learned some helpful tips on how to keep litter away from our communities, waterways, wildlife, and coastline.

Litter Free Land and Sea is an initiative of Carteret County Government, Crystal Coast Economic Development, Carteret County Sheriff’s Office, and various community partners, which involves the community in responsible solutions for a clean and beautiful environment and promotes community awareness, public education, litter prevention, collection and enforcement.
