[ARCHIVED] Tropical storm watch issued for Carteret County ahead of Idalia

Emergency Services Information Storm Watch

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (August 29, 2023) – A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for Carteret County ahead of potential impacts from Hurricane Idalia. A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.

According to the National Weather Service, weather conditions are expected to impact Carteret County starting Wednesday afternoon and Idalia is forecast to be at tropical storm strength as to approaches eastern North Carolina on Thursday. Heavy rainfall, potential flash flooding, strong winds and isolated tornadoes remain the greatest concern for our area. Due to King Tides this week, residents should pay close attention to high-tide cycles. The storm’s track and intensity are still being monitored, so these projections could change if the storm’s track changes.

“Carteret County Emergency Services is closely monitoring Idalia and county staff are prepared to act to ensure our community is as ready as it can be,” said Emergency Services Director Stephen Rea. “Carteret County residents should continue to check their local weather outlets for updated storm forecasts and complete their personal preparations.”

For those who have not yet registered, Carteret County offers the CodeRed Emergency Notification System. This free service delivers voicemail, text messages, and email notifications about emergency situations, providing timely information and instructions for necessary actions. To register, visit https://carteretcountync.gov/525/Emergency-Notification.

Carteret County Emergency Services updates will appear on the Carteret County website at www.carteretcountync.gov and on the Carteret County Facebook page @carteretcounty. For the latest weather updates and information on Idalia’s progress, visit the National Weather Service website at weather.gov/mhx/tropical.
