[ARCHIVED] Carteret County DSS offers helping hand to seniors with home improvement program

CCHHS - News Release Template

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (January 22, 2024) – The Carteret County Department of Social Services (DSS) announces limited funding available through its Housing and Home Improvement Program to assist individuals aged 60 and older with essential repairs and upgrades to their homes. This program is a lifeline for many seniors who lack the financial resources or physical ability to maintain their homes safely and comfortably.

"For many seniors, financial constraints or physical limitations make it difficult to keep their homes in good condition," says Jessica Adams, Director of Carteret County DSS. "Our Housing and Home Improvement Program bridges that gap, providing much-needed support to improve their living environment and promote independence.”

Eligible applicants can receive vouchers based on two categories: enhancing mobility and accessibility, and upgrading basic household necessities. This includes modifications like ramps and grab bars to improve safety, as well as repairs or replacements for essential appliances and furniture, ensuring seniors have comfortable and functional living spaces.

To qualify, applicants must be 60 years of age or older, reside in a Carteret County home (written landlord permission required for renters), and lack someone capable and willing to perform necessary repairs or improvements. The program offers a maximum of $7,000 in vouchers per individual.

Funds cannot be used to pay for rent, utility bills, food, medicine, security deposits, utility deposits, taxes, home improvements negatively affecting the structural integrity of the home, home improvements that are the obligation of the landlord, or duplication of any home improvement service to the same housing unit for three consecutive years following receipt of the initial service.

Limited funding is available, so interested individuals are encouraged to apply soon. For program details and application forms, please reach out to Alicia Taylor or Stephanie Hancock at Carteret County DSS by calling 252-728-3181 or visiting https://www.ncdhhs.gov/divisions/aging-and-adult-services/housing-and-home-improvement-assistance.
