[ARCHIVED] Carteret County hires new economic development director

Kirk, Rod

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (March 26, 2024) – Carteret County has a new leader for economic development. Rod Kirk has been selected to serve as the economic development director. In this role, Kirk will oversee the County’s Economic Development Department, leading the County’s efforts to foster and encourage best practices in economic development activities.

“We’re happy to welcome someone with Mr. Kirk’s professional background and expertise to our senior leadership team and our community partners,” said Tommy Burns, Carteret County manager. “His experience in economic development, particularly in tourism-driven areas and at the local level, makes him a perfect fit for the unique opportunities associated with the economic development program in Carteret County.”

As director, Kirk will lead all aspects of economic development, entrepreneurship and workforce development efforts, which include serving as a liaison for local, state, and federal partners focused on effective development relationships with Carteret County. Responsibilities will include staying at the forefront of business development trends and implementing strategic plans to attract new industries, retain existing ones, and serve the needs of the entire business community.

Kirk brings nearly 20 years of economic development experience, including leadership positions with Robertson County and Montgomery County, Tennessee. Recently, he served as the Economic Development Director for the City of Hendersonville, Tennessee, where he was responsible for the creation and implementation of all economic development strategies, programs, and policies.

“I look forward to working with the county’s dedicated staff and leaders from both the private and public sectors,” said Kirk. “Together, we will continue to create opportunities for workers, investors, and entrepreneurs, and spread the message that Carteret County is a great place to do business.”

Kirk holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from Towson University and has earned numerous certifications in the economic development field. In addition, he was a 4-year letterman for the university’s men’s basketball program.

Kirk began his role as director on Monday, March 25, 2024.
