[ARCHIVED] Volunteers sought for citizen advisory boards and committees

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (June 25, 2024) – The Carteret County Board of Commissioners is seeking qualified applicants to fill roles on several citizen advisory boards and committees. Most positions will be filled by citizens who reside in the district listed, but final appointment decisions are at the discretion of the Board of Commissioners. Additionally, some positions must be filled by residents that reside within the Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) of a municipality, which is roughly a one-mile radius outside of the municipal limits. These appointees serve as the county representative on those municipal advisory boards.

Applications are available on the Carteret County website. Residents can submit completed applications by email to Lori Turner, Clerk to the Board of Commissioners, at lori.turner@carteretcountync.gov. Applications can also be hand-delivered to the County Administration office located at 210 Turner Street in Beaufort, NC 28516, or mailed to the same address to the attention of Lori Turner.

Vacant seats are available for the following boards and committees: 

  • Adult Home Community Advisory Committee: Four one-year terms
  • Aging Planning Board: 
    • Two at-large positions for residents 60 and over
    • One Senior Tar Heel Legislative Delegate
    • One Alternate Senior Tar Heel Legislative Delegate
  • CCATS Advisory Board: One Local Government Representative
  • Consolidated Human Services Board: 
    • Two four-year Consumer/Human Services terms
    • One four-year Psychiatrist term
    • One four-year Psychologist term
    • One four-year General Public term
    • Two four-year Consumer terms
  • Cultural & Recreational Advisory Board: 
    • One three-year term (Commissioner Chadwick's District 6 Representative)
    • One three-year term (Commissioner Farrington's District 4 Representative)
  • Economic Development Foundation Board: Two one-year terms
  • Fire and EMS Commission: One EMS Chief's Association representative (two-year term)
  • Fireman's Relief Fund Board: 
    • One Atlantic Representative (two-year term)
    • Two Broad & Gales Creek Representatives (two-year terms)
    • One Cedar Island Representative (two-year term)
    • Two Harkers Island Representatives (two-year terms)
    • One Mill Creek Representative (two-year term)
    • One Marshallberg Representative (two-year term)
    • Two Otway Representatives (two-year terms)
    • Two South River-Merrimon Representatives (two-year terms)
  • Highway 70 Corridor Commission: 
    • One vacant Transportation Committee representative (one-year term)
  • Hospital Board of Trustees: 
    • One vacant Commissioner seat
    • Three vacant three-year terms
  • Juvenile Crime Prevention Council: 
    • One vacant Parks & Recreation Representative (two-year term)
    • One vacant Person Under 21 Representative (two-year term)
    • One vacant Non-Profit Advocate representative (two-year term)
  • Nursing Home Advisory Committee: Five one-year terms (mandatory state training required)
  • Senior Center Advisory Board: One vacant two-year term (Commissioner Quinn's Representative)
  • Tourism Development Authority: One vacant Realtors Representative (three-year term)
  • Town of Cape Carteret Zoning Board of Adjustment (ETJ) & Planning Board (ETJ): Two three-year terms
  • Town of Cedar Point Planning & Zoning Board (“ETJ”): 
    • One vacant three-year term
    • One vacant Alternate three-year term
  • Town of Peletier Planning Board (“ETJ”): One vacant three-year term
  • Transportation Committee: One vacant Bogue Banks Mayor seat (no term expiration)
  • Waterways Management Committee: One vacant two-year term (Commissioner Cavanaugh's District 3 Representative)
  • Western Carteret Interlocal Agency (“ILA”): One vacant Alternate term
  • Zoning Board of Adjustment: One vacant three-year term

Prospective members must reside within Carteret County and demonstrate a commitment to invest the necessary time, attention, and dedication required to fulfill their responsibilities and actively contribute to the operations of the Board or Committee.

Residents interested in applying should submit applications by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, for consideration by the Board at their meeting on July 15, 2024.
