CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (March 31, 2025) – Carteret County is hosting a special month-long latex paint recycling program from April 1 to April 30, 2025. Residents are invited to drop off their old or unused latex paint for free and safe disposal at two convenient locations: 800 Hibbs Road in Newport and 485 Harkers Island Road in Otway.
This initiative, organized by the Carteret County Solid Waste Division, aims to reduce landfill waste and promote environmental sustainability. By recycling latex paint, residents can help repurpose it into new paint or other useful materials, keeping harmful substances out of local ecosystems.
To participate, residents should bring latex paint in its original container with a clearly labeled product name. The paint must be in liquid form, as dried or solidified paint will not be accepted. Please note that oil-based paints, solvents such as turpentine and creosote, and unlabeled containers are not eligible for this program.
“Recycling latex paint is a simple way to protect our environment,” said Billy Merkley, Public Works Director for Carteret County. “By keeping these materials out of landfills, we’re not only preserving natural resources but also creating opportunities to reuse and repurpose them.”
For materials not accepted in this program, such as oil-based paints or solvents, residents can participate in the Coastal Environmental Partnership Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
