[ARCHIVED] Pinwheel Planting Ceremony and Walk Planned for Child Abuse Prevention Month in Beaufort

Pinwheels for Prevention 2025

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (April 7, 2025) – In recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Carteret County Department of Social Services (DSS), South Mountain Children’s Advocacy Center, and N.C. Guardian ad Litem Program will plant a pinwheel garden on the grounds of the Carteret County Courthouse in Beaufort on Tuesday, April 15, at 9 a.m.

The pinwheel serves as the national symbol of child abuse prevention, representing the hope, health, and happiness of all children. Pinwheel gardens are planted across the country during April to raise awareness for this cause.

Following the planting ceremony, a community walk will be held. Attendees are encouraged to wear blue to show support. Those unable to attend can still participate by planting pinwheels at their homes or workplaces and sharing photos on social media.

Child abuse remains a pressing issue nationwide. In 2022, approximately 550,000 children were victims of abuse and neglect in the United States, with an estimated 1,990 child fatalities—a number that has risen consistently over the past five years, according to the National Children’s Alliance. Studies also indicate that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys experience abuse. Child abuse affects all communities, making awareness and prevention efforts vital.

The pinwheel garden will remain on display throughout April, concluding on April 30, 2025.

To report suspected child abuse or neglect, contact the Carteret County Department of Social Services at 252-728-3181 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. After hours, weekends, and holidays, reports can be made to the County Communications Center at 252-726-1911 or by calling 911 in emergencies.
