[ARCHIVED] County Monitoring Erin as Hurricane Season Continues; Preparedness Encouraged

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (Aug. 11, 2025)  Carteret County Emergency Management is closely tracking Tropical Storm Erin, now in the eastern Atlantic. The storm is expected to strengthen over the coming days.

It’s too early to know if Erin will affect the U.S., but residents are encouraged to use this time to review hurricane plans, gather essential supplies, and stay informed about forecast updates and local emergency information.

Current forecast models suggest Erin could become the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, with the possibility of developing into a major hurricane. The storm’s path remains uncertain and will depend on how it evolves. Any potential impacts to the U.S. are not expected until next week, if at all.

“At this stage, our focus is on readiness, not alarm,” said Stephen Rea, Director of Carteret County Emergency Management. “By checking supplies, updating communication plans, and staying informed, our community will be better prepared for whatever the season brings.”

Steps for Hurricane Preparedness:

  • Checking your hurricane kit: water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, and batteries.
  • Reviewing your family’s evacuation and communication plan.
  • Making sure you can receive local emergency alerts and weather updates.
  • Knowing your evacuation routes and storing important documents safely
  • Include your pets in your planning.

Carteret County Emergency Management will continue to share updates from the National Hurricane Center as the situation becomes clearer. For official storm information, visit www.hurricanes.gov and the National Weather Service at www.weather.gov/mhx.
