[ARCHIVED] Carteret County Provides Latest Information on Hurricane Erin Preparations

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (Aug. 18, 2025) – Carteret County officials continue monitoring Major Hurricane Erin as it moves across the Atlantic. This Category 4 hurricane is expected to remain offshore, but residents along Bogue Banks, in Down East communities, and near waterways should be aware that coastal flooding, strong winds, and high surf are possible from Tuesday evening through Thursday.

The National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City reports that coastal flooding could begin with the high tide Tuesday evening, August 19. A Coastal Flood Watch is in effect for West Carteret, with significant beach and coastal impacts possible, including persistent rip currents, dangerous surf, and beach erosion. Residents should follow the beach warning flag system; a Red Flag indicates high hazard conditions, and swimming is not recommended.

Wind gusts between 30 and 44 mph are forecast beginning Wednesday and peaking Thursday, especially along the coast near Cedar Island. Wind-driven water may push into the Pamlico Sound, causing localized flooding that could affect roads during high tide. No mandatory evacuation orders are in effect, but residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to review their plans and be ready to move if necessary.

Carteret County officials urge residents to review hurricane preparedness plans, ensure emergency kits are stocked, secure important documents and outdoor items, include pets in planning, prepare for potential power outages, and check on neighbors who may need assistance.

Carteret County Emergency Services will continue to share updates from the National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City as the situation evolves. Residents are urged to follow guidance from trusted, verified sources of information. For official storm updates, visit www.hurricanes.gov and the National Weather Service at www.weather.gov/mhx. Stay tuned to the county’s website, social media channels, and local media for updates. For local preparedness resources, visit www.carteretcountync.gov or call 252-222-5841.

Carteret County Emergency Services will continue to issue periodic updates, with the next update scheduled no later than Tuesday, August 19 at 4:00 p.m.
