[ARCHIVED] Carteret County Government Operation Changes

Office Closure Template - PTC 16

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (September 22, 2023) – Due to the potential impacts from Post Tropical Cyclone 16, Carteret County Government Buildings will close Friday, September 22 at 2:30 p.m. This includes all county public library branches, Board of Elections, Health Department, Social Services, Senior Center, and Register of Deeds. According to the National Weather Service, the main threats to Carteret County include tropical storm force winds, several inches of rain, storm surge, flooding, rip currents, and the potential for tornadoes.

All residents are strongly advised to stay vigilant and remain prepared for the possibility of tropical storm force winds, which may lead to scattered tree damage, as well as heavy rainfall capable of causing flash flooding, power outages, and localized inundation. For individuals residing in low-lying areas with a history of significant flooding during previous tropical events or hurricanes, it is highly recommended that preparations for potential flooding be initiated promptly. This includes relocating vehicles to higher ground to prevent flood damage.

Carteret County Emergency Services is working with County Administration and the Board of Commissioners to keep everyone in our area as safe as possible. Carteret County residents should have a plan and be prepared for this storm and the remainder of hurricane season. Residents are encouraged to check their Emergency Supply Kits and Pet Disaster Supply Kits for needed supplies necessary during tropical storms and hurricanes. Individuals planning to travel should use extreme caution and good judgment when planning travel routes and should never drive through standing or rushing water. Emergency crews will be staged and ready to help those in emergency situations. If you have special needs that require power, please ensure you have a personal backup plan.

Please stay tuned to Carteret County website, social media channels, and local media for any pertinent updates, which will be issued as warranted.
