CARTERET COUNTY, NC (November 6, 2023) – Carteret County announced today that the county courthouse cupola in Beaufort has been illuminated green as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide effort by counties, the National Association of Counties (NACo), and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers.
From November 6-12, the county courthouse cupola will be illuminated green to show support for veterans and raise awareness around the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.
Now in its second year, Operation Green Light is expected to draw hundreds of counties to participate. The county role in administering services for veterans includes County Veterans Service Officers helping fellow service members access more than $52 billion in federal health, disability and compensation benefits each year, as well as other services supporting the approximately 200,000 service members who transition into civilian communities annually.
“As a community, we recognize the vital role our veterans have played in safeguarding our freedoms and protecting our nation,” said Brenda Dubose, Carteret County Veterans Services Director. “Operation Green Light serves as a heartfelt gesture of our support and appreciation for their dedicated service. This initiative underscores our commitment to providing the resources and assistance that our veterans and their families need as they transition into civilian life. It’s an honor participate in this nationwide effort, standing together with our veterans and the entire community, to emphasize the significance of supporting those who have selflessly served our country.”
In addition to lighting the county courthouse cupola, we invite residents, businesses, and other organizations to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their home to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends. By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.
Carteret County Veterans Services staff remains committed to assisting veteran residents throughout the year. Veterans and their family members can discover more about the available resources by visiting the Veterans Services office at 3710-B John Platt Drive in Morehead City., calling (252) 728-8440, or visiting the county website at https://www.carteretcountync.gov/159/Veterans-Services.
