[ARCHIVED] Carteret County Health Department reminds residents to get their flu shot

NIVW December

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (December 1, 2023) – With the flu season underway, the Carteret County Health Department (CCHD) emphasizes the importance of getting the annual flu vaccine during National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW), observed from December 4 to 8.

Flu vaccination is especially important in preparation for holiday gatherings. Although the flu vaccine is generally recommended before the end of October, it is not too late to get protected. Given that the flu commonly peaks in February with significant activity extending into May, residents are encouraged to take this opportunity and get vaccinated.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone aged six months and older to receive a yearly flu vaccine.

In addition to the flu vaccine, health officials recommend practicing respiratory hygiene, covering the mouth when coughing, and maintaining proper hand-washing routines to fight germs and protect against the flu.

Individuals strongly encouraged to receive the flu vaccine due to higher risk for complications include:

  • Children aged 6 months through 4 years
  • Pregnant women
  • Individuals 50 years of age or older
  • Those aged 6 months and older with chronic health problems
  • Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
  • Health care workers, household contacts, caregivers, or individuals living with someone at high risk for complications from the flu
  • Out-of-home caregivers of children under 6 months old

CCHD offers flu vaccines at the immunization clinic. Residents can schedule an appointment by calling (252) 728-8550, option 2, during regular business hours. For the latest information on the flu vaccine, visit the health department’s website https://www.carteretcountync.gov/1148/2023-2024-FLU.
