CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (February 1, 2026) – Carteret County is experiencing hazardous conditions during a historic snowfall. Roadways and bridges remain dangerous, with deep snow drifts reported in multiple areas, and emergency vehicles are encountering challenges while traveling.
The County’s priority is the safety of residents and emergency responders. Travel is difficult under current conditions, and response to some non-critical calls may take longer than usual. Life-threatening emergencies will continue to receive priority. Residents are strongly urged to avoid travel, which will help reduce call volume and allow emergency responders to focus on critical needs.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is using all available resources in the area, with crews prioritizing major routes and critical access points as conditions allow. Drivers should stay clear of roadways to allow crews to safely clear snow and ice. County Public Works and Public Buildings teams have begun safely removing snow and ice from County facilities to reopen them as soon as possible.
Residents are reminded that all County Convenience Sites are closed, and County Government offices will also be closed on Monday, Feb. 2.
Safety reminders for the public:
- Use heating sources safely and never operate generators or grills indoors.
- Limit time outdoors because of dangerous wind chills.
- Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those without reliable heat.
A warming shelter is open at the Salvation Army, 2800 Bridges Street in Morehead City.
Stay informed through local media, the National Weather Service, and Carteret County Emergency Services. Additional preparedness information is available at ReadyNC.gov. Residents should call 9-1-1 for emergencies only, and report power outages directly to utility providers so restoration efforts can begin when conditions are safe.
